Greg fails his first proficiency test
Occurs in 5.01 - Viva Las Vegas
Greg's first proficiency test is to help solve the case of a man who is shot in a club. He is found with a Polaroid photo of another dead man in his hand. Greg fails this proficiency test, as he uses a toilet in the club, without clearing the restroom first. Grissom concludes that he could of contaminated evidence, or flushed evidence away. However, Grissom says that he will give him another chance.

Catherine wants a promotion
Occurs in 5.05 - Swap Meet
Catherine would like a promotion to be the day-shift supervisor, as it would give her better working hours and allow her to be at home more with Lindsay. However, Conrad Ecklie is in disagreement with Catherine getting a promotion.

The team is split
Occurs in 5.09 - Mea Culpa
While on the stand of a murder trial, Grissom is being questioned about the evidence he collected. When shown a piece of the evidence he collected, he sees something which he doesn't remember - a fingerprint. The case has to be reinvestigated and Conrad Ecklie initiates an inquiry into Grissom's team. He comes to the conclusion that the team needs to be split up. He promotes Catherine to be the supervisor of the swing-swift, with Warrick and Nick as her team, and Grissom remains supervisor of the night-shift, with Sara, Greg and Sofia Curtis as his team.

Greg passes his final proficiency test
Occurs in 5.11 - Who Shot Sherlock?
For his final proficiency test, Greg has to investigate the mysterious shooting of a man in his home. The man is a part of Sherlock Holmes club, and is the Sherlock Holmes. After collecting and examining all the evidence, Greg initially comes to the wrong conclusion and determines that the shooting was a suicide. However, he finally works out that it was actually a murder, and works out who committed it. He passes his final proficiency test and officially becomes a CSI.

Sara is suspended
Occurs in 5.13 - Nesting Dolls
Sara is assigned to work with Catherine's team on a case, and while with Catherine in an interrogation with a suspect, Sara is quick to jump to conclusions and ruins any chance of them getting anything from him. Catherine and Sara get into a dispute in the corridor and Sara is very disrespectful to Catherine. Conrad Ecklie witnesses the dispute and puts Sara on suspension for her behaviour. Grissom finds out about Sara's suspension and goes to her home to ask her about it. This leads to Sara opening up about her childhood to him.

Sara has a close call
Occurs in 5.21 - Committed
Grissom and Sara investigate the murder of a patient of a mental hospital for prison inmates. Half-way through the case, Grissom and Sara need to do a little snooping in the nurses' station. Grissom goes off to get the key for a drawer, and a patient of the hospital manages to grab Sara and holds a sharp instrument to her throat while ranting. Luckily, Grissom comes back with a security guard to open the drawer quickly, and the situation is gotten under control.

Nick is kidnapped
Occurs in 5.24-25 - Grave Danger 1 & 2
Nick goes out to investigate a pile of internal organs which has been left in a parking lot. The officer on the scene takes his eyes off Nick just long enough for Nick to be kidnapped. The CSIs soon receive an envelope about Nick's kidnapping and they discover that he has been buried alive. Both Grissom and Catherine's teams pull together in a rush to find Nick and save his life before he suffocates.
