Welcome to the fanlisting for the discipline of psychology - academic, applied or both. I would give it a name, but I think psychology encompasses so much that it's too difficult to come up with something that sums it up and isn't limiting, in under 20 words! :) In brief, psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour, including brain processes. Psychology has many fields (e.g. social, forensic/criminal, developmental) and it uses a wide range of methods to develop theories. Psychology is not another word for psychiatry or counselling and does not involve mind reading. Of course, psychology is closely linked with psychiatry and counselling, but it is not the same.

Psychology has a varied history and has its routes mainly in philosophy and biology. It has gone through trends of research and ways of thinking, e.g. psychoanalysis in the 1890s (developed by Freud), behaviourism in the early 20th century (a reaction to the subjectivity in psychoanalysis - behaviourism aimed to be scientific) and humanistic psychology in the 1950s (a reaction to the behaviourist movement largely - the idea was to look at people as whole beings, rather than just studying small areas). I've been studying psychology for the last 5 years or so. I did an A-level in it and I am now working towards my BSc in it part-time with The Open University. I find psychology endlessly interesting and easily applicable to everyday situations and my life in general. It has opened my mind to many ideas and new perspectives and I have also met some wonderfully interesting people on the way! I have a particular interest in the areas of social and forensic psychology and love qualitative methods. I'm also pretty interested in memory, sleep and dreaming and developmental and abnormal psychology.
